JOB TITLE: (Seasonal) Garden Assistant

SUBSIDIARY: Sicangu Food Sovereignty Initiative

REPORTS TO: Food Sovereignty Director

JOB SUMMARY:

The Sicangu Food Sovereignty Initiative (FSI) is looking to hire a part _me Garden Assistant for the 2020 season. The Garden Assistant will assist the Garden Manager at the Keya Wakpala Garden, located behind Turtle Creek Crossing Super Foods in Mission. The Garden Assistant will also be responsible for coordinating the development of community gardens and other projects with FSI community partners and will assist with skillshares and wild harvesting events.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Assisting the Garden Manager with planning, maintenance, and harvesting in the Keya Wakpala Garden. May also be required to help supervise summer youth garden interns.

  • Attending FSI community roundtables to help discern opportunities for collaboration between the FSI and community partners.

  • Recruiting and managing community volunteers to develop community gardens with FSI community partners.

  • Providing technical assistance as needed to develop community gardens.

  • Assisting with the Lakota Foodways project, including helping to coordinate and lead wild food harvesting events and assisting with community food skillshares.

  • May be required to assist the Market Manager on mobile market days and with activities to help reach the FSI’s 2020 garden season goal of no food waste.

  • Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid driver’s license and dependable transportation

  • Able to lift 50 pounds

  • Able to work evening and weekends on an as-needed basis

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Basic computer skills

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently

  • Excellent time management and communication skills

  • Able to create clear work-plans to meet deadlines

  • Possess problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritize

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of wild plants native to the Rosebud Reservation that can be harvested for food or medicinal purposes

  • Previous gardening experience

  • Experience with outreach and community organizing

  • Experience recruiting and managing long-term volunteers

COMPENSATION

This position is a part-time, 30/hour week position from May through September 2020. The position is grant-funded. The Garden Assistant will be compensated at a rate of $15/hour.
